The Umbrella Academy, Vol. 1: Apocalypse Suite The Umbrella Academy, Vol. 1: Apocalypse Suite by Gerard Way

My review

This graphic novel has a great look, awesome characters, and some fresh ideas. Unfortunately, with only one book, we get a taste for the Umbrella Academy world, and nothing else. I look forwad to a second volume to learn a little more about these character. I also hope we find out about some extraordinary children born at that fated second who weren’t brought to the Umbrella Academy.

The Premise: Children around the world born at the same second have special powers of some sort. A handful of these newborns are gathered by an eccentric millionare to create the Umbrella Academy. These pint-size crime fighters grow apart until they are brought together by a new threat to the survival of the human race.

Life Sucks Life Sucks by Jessica Abel

rating: 2 of 5 stars
I read this book because it was getting some buzz for YA graphic novels, and I like to keep that section going since it snags readers that won’t look in any other section. This is a vampire story, so there is a built in audience for it right now, and that’s a good thing because I don’t think it could make it on its own. I just didn’t find anything new or innovative in this story – it features a vampire that doesn’t want to be one in love with a human girl who does want to be one. Sound familiar?

I did order it for my library because, as I said, it’s got a built-in audience right now, and the graphics are eye-catching. I assume from the abrupt ending another one will be coming along; I guess I hope I gets a little better.
