a lovely addition to my collection May 21, 2007

Filed under: Manhattan Life — catherineeliza @ 1:53 pm

I really love collecting things. When I was in middle school, I collected enough Campbell soup labels for a Puffalump. In college, I collected soup labels for a set of mugs with Campbell kids painted on them. There’s just something special about a marketing product that cannot simply be purchased, you have to put in a little more effort. So now I’m collecting the Shrek glasses from McDonalds. I participated in the same promotion with Disney character glasses several years ago, which made much more sense since I love Disney.

I actually don’t like Shrek. I think 3 out of 4 of these glasses are ugly (I have a thing for Puss in Boots). But they are collectible, and so I want them. As of this afternoon, I have 3 of the 4. Only one to go (these have been much easier to collect than the Disney glasses because now I live in a city that has a McDonalds about every 5 blocks, so I just keep stopping in). I cannot tell you what pleasure I will derive from serving guests beverages out of these ugly glasses this summer. And unlike my Disney glasses and Campbell kid mugs, I won’t shed a tear if one gets broken.

Never even read this book – guess I’d better.

  What Dickens Character Are You?

Amy Doritt! You’re the title character in Dickens’s novel, Little Dorrit. You’re a devoted daughter to your father, who had a little run in with the law. You’re strong and independent and a leader. You’re quiet though, but it’s okay because you end up marrying your crush, Arthur Clennam who just happens to be 20 years older than you!

snail mail May 16, 2007

Filed under: Manhattan Life — catherineeliza @ 3:34 pm

I really love mail, always have. I’m talking quality mail of course, none of your junk. If possible, I enjoy sending cards and letters even more than receiving them. A side-effect of this obsession is that I constantly indulge in my desire to purchase stamps and stationary; telling myself they’re very useful things and I’ll always be able to use them.
Friends, the postage rate went up on Monday, and I still have 37¢ that I’m trying to use up. I also own approximately 2,346 picture postcards. I cry out for your help. If you would like to receive a card from me, please email me your request and mailing address (if you think I have it, you’re probably wrong – I’m very disorganized), and you can look forward to some personalized mail in the near future. Thank you for your help.

mysteries to ponder

Filed under: Manhattan Life — catherineeliza @ 2:58 pm
  • How come I’m only motivated to write blog posts when there’s homework to be done?
  • Why do people in Manhattan persist in using wide strollers when they are impossible to get through doorways or to pass on the

subway when they could just as easily use this stroller and make things much easier for us all?

  • Why can’t I make my sidebar visible in Firefox?
  • I guess that’s all for now, and really, the first one isn’t really a mystery to me at all.  That second one though…

viva Las Vegas May 3, 2007

Filed under: Manhattan Life — catherineeliza @ 2:05 pm

I went to Las Vegas once on a road trip to California. I didn’t like it. We stopped in the middle of the night for dinner, and you’d have thought it was the middle of the day by the number of people walking around. That wasn’t so much the issue, it was that I felt like I was surrounded by zombies; zombies playing the slots, zombies walking from buffet to buffet. I really felt no desire to ever return. Until now…
I’ve never seen Cirque du Soleil and I always thought I’d like to. I’d really love to see their current Beatles show; it seems really fun.

Did you hear this? Bette Midler is taking over Celine Dion’s slot at Caesar’s Palace! No disrespect to Celine, the girl can sure sing a song, but Bette’s much more my flavor. I’d really like to see this show too.  Hopefully she’ll be doing some great Burlesque bits.  Maybe next year I can figure out a way for a Vegas weekend…

Euripides’ Alcestis

In a version by Ted Hughes

“What would we do without this invaluable indie troupe that keeps finding brilliant poetic drama that others have somehow ignored?” —nytheatre.com on Handcart’s Alcestis

Only ten days remain to see Handcart Ensemble’s enthrallingly staged Alcestis (spotlighted under nytheatre.com’s Brilliant Writers, Onstage in NYC’s Indie Theaters). Combining powerfully acted characters with a mesmerizingly choreographed chorus and an innovative, actor-generated sound score, this production engages its audiences on every level imaginable. Ted Hughes’s dazzling adaptation of the Euripides text is sublime in its aural beauty, hilarity, and imagination — a career-crowning, final affirmation of life completed by England’s great Poet Laureate in the year of his death.
